I always like it when a new tld goes online. Today’s such a day.
.cat, the top level domain for the Catalan community has been added to the dns root somewhere yesterday.
What I like even more is that – probably by accident – their zone is transferable, using the name server dns-cat.pch.net. This means that anyone can get a list of all the domains that are registered under this top level domain. More in that in the next post.
Further reading:
- Campaign site puntcat.org
- .CAT registry, apparently in Catalan only
- ICANN application form
Currently the following domains are registered under .cat:
- assaciacio.cat
- associaci??.cat
- domini.cat
- fundacio.cat
- fundaci??.cat
- nic.cat
- puntcat.cat
- registre.cat
- tan.cat
- whois.cat
- www.cat
Some observations:
- The TLD supports Internationalised Domain Names, somewhat logical given the nature of the tld.
- assaciacio.cat seems like a typo to me, given the IDN version is associaci??.cat (But then again, I don’t speak
SpanishCatalan, so who knows..) - All the domains except whois.cat point to the registry website, which is in Catalan only.

Hi,
Yup, assaciacio was a (my!) typo, already corrected. And, btw, the names are not in Spanish, but Catalan. We expect to translate the site by the time we start registering domains (end of january) and no, the zone will not be transferable at that time anymore
